This giant of the sage family was traditionally used in the musky perfumes of the rich aristocracy. The tall purple and pink flowers are laden with fragrance during the summer months and when cut down, the plant is sticky with essential oil. In modern aromatherapy, Clary Sage is often used in treatments for women during transitional periods such as puberty, labour and menopause due to its restorative and balancing effects. Used in massage or a vaporising blend, Clary Sage can help improve the symptoms of menstruation and menopause, such as cramp, tiredness and mood swings, bringing calm and balance to the body and mind.

Essential oil safety

Essential oils are very potent, so you have to be cautious when you use them. Remember, a little goes a long way!

Less is more! You can always add another drop, so start slow, whether you’re using your oils topically, aromatically, or internally.

Due to potency, some oils may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply a pure vegetable oil to the affected area to dilute. Do not use water, this will make the irritation worse because of the chemistry between your skin and the natural incompatibility of water and oils.

Always read label directions for each individual oil before use.

Do not put essential oils in eyes, ears, nose, or other areas with sensitive skin.
