Should You Add Lemon Essential Oil to Your Tea? Think Twice!

You might be tempted to add a drop of lemon essential oil to your tea, but is it really a good idea? Although it's technically possible, there are some safety concerns you should be aware of before diving in.

Potential Risks of Adding Lemon Essential Oil to Tea

  1. Essential oils don't dissolve in water – Lemon essential oil won't mix with your tea, so it will float on the surface. This can potentially cause chemical burns to your lips, mouth, or throat, as undiluted lemon oil can be harsh on the skin and delicate mucous membranes.

  2. The heat may alter the oil's properties – The heat from your tea may cause the more delicate lemon essential oil molecules to evaporate, leaving mostly limonene behind. Limonene is a potent grease cutter, which may not be something you want to consume.

  3. Potential for internal damage – Some people who have ingested lemon oil in water have experienced scarring on their esophagus from the oil.

Safer Alternatives for Lemon Flavor in Your Tea

Instead of using lemon essential oil, try these safer options:

  • Add a splash of lemon juice or a slice of fresh lemon to your tea.
  • If you don't have access to fresh or bottled lemon juice but still want to use the essential oil, try this method: Place a few drops of lemon oil on a paper towel and set it on top of your tea leaves or tea bags. Cover tightly and leave for a few days. The tea will absorb the aromatics of the lemon oil without the risks associated with ingesting the oil directly.

At Delune, we prioritize safety and generally do not recommend ingesting essential oils. Remember to enjoy your tea responsibly and explore these alternatives to savor the delightful taste of lemon without the risks.
